THE CLAY COWBOY

Stipple engraving by James Denison-Pender on an optical
crystal rectangular paperweight.

Height 11cm, width 9cm, depth 3cm.

This engraving was inspired by the folk art tradition of clay
modelling in Brazil. An image of a small clay model
horseman has been set in a realistic setting following a real
Mato Grosso cowboy. The herd of cattle also includes an
image of a clay bull by Mestre Vitalino, who was primarily
responsible for developing Brazilian clay modelling into an
art form. The idea of the engraving was to see how such
stylized but very human figures would relate to the real
world.

Engraved on the front and back surfaces.
