EPSTEIN BRONZE AT GLENKILN

Stipple engraving by James Denison-Pender on a Trumpet Foot Goblet by Royal Leerdam . Height 24cm, diameter 9 cm.

Amongst the several large sculptures on the hillside in the Glenkiln Estate in Dumfriesshire is this bronze by Jacob Epstein. She stands in a copse of scotch pines, often surrounded by sheep, and gives the appearance on a sheppardess, perhaps from the time of the Highland clearances. She looks thin and tired. She is obviously pregnant but has no bust. On the goblet she occupies the inside surface, and looks out through the trees to the living world of the sheep.

Engraved on the inside and outside back surfaces.
