BEZHIN MEADOW

Stipple and drill engraving by James Denison-Pender on two
lead crystal spun discs, each engraved on both sides.

Diameter 29cm.

The engraving is based on the short story from The Hunting
Sketches by Ivan Turgenev, published in 1852. The hunter
comes across a group of boys from the village who have come
to spend the night in the meadow guarding the horses. He
listens to them as they scare each other by telling ghost stories.
It is not an exact illustration of the story, which takes place
entirely at night. The engraving shows six boys, each one
modelled on one of the engraver’s grandsons. In the original
story there are only five boys.
